Fulbright Scholar From Romania Joins Cox Center For Academic Year 2014-2015
Oana Stefanita, a doctoral student at the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration in Bucharest, Romania, joined the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research in August as a visiting scholar.
Stefanita received a Visiting Student Researcher Award from the Fulbright Foreign Student Program to cover her 10-month stay in the Cox Center, a unit of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
Stefanita plans to use the period of study in the U.S. to review the scholarly literature in mass communication, focusing in particular on framing. The framing literature focuses on how information is presented to the audience and the impact of the presentation or framing of messages on how audience members process messages.
At the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration, Stefanita teaches a course of Mass Media and Society within the Faculty of Communication and Public Relations. She plans to develop a handbook for students in the course as a result of her study in the United States.
During those 10 months, Stefanita will visit classes and meet with faculty in the Grady College. She also will have the opportunity to participate in research projects in the Cox Center and Grady College.
Stefanita also will work on her doctoral dissertation, which examines framing effects in the context of European Union identity.
“We are delighted to have Oana with us in the Center,” Dr. Lee B. Becker, director of the Cox International Center, said. “I am confident she will learn from her time with us and contribute to the work of the Center and the College.”
Dr. Nicoleta Corbu, now dean of the Faculty of Communication and Public Relations at the National University, spent a year in the Cox Center under the auspices of the Fulbright Program in 2008-2009.
