Cox Center Director Leads Survey Methodology Workshop at Shanghai International Studies University
Cox International Center Director Dr. Lee B. Becker led a two-day workshop on techniques for teaching survey methodology for faculty and graduate students at the School of International Journalism at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) during a 12-day visit to the campus.
He also gave two lectures to undergraduate students, one of the state of journalism in the United States and one on journalism as applied social science.
About 15 faculty and graduate students attended the two-day workshop. The undergraduate lecture on U.S. journalism was attended by about 30 students, while about 15 attended the lecture on the relevance of social science methodology for the practice of journalism.
Dr. Becker was at SISU to discuss a variety of collaborative teaching and research enterprises with the faculty of the School of International Journalism.
He was hosted by Dr. Peiqin Chen, vice dean of the School of Journalism and Deputy Director of the Center for Global Public Opinion Research in China, and by Dr. Ke Guo, dean of the School of Journalism.
The James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research is a unit of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
Dr. Chen had visited the Grady College under the auspices of the Cox International Center in late August and early September of 2013.
Dr. Becker discussed the possibility of shared programs between the Grady College and the School of International Journalism at both the graduate and undergraduate levels with faculty and administrators at SISU.
Dr. Chen and Dr. Becker also discussed possible future research projects involving the Center for Global Public Opinion of China and the Cox International Center.
The Cox International Center has conducted numerous studies of public opinion around the work on a variety of media topics.
Dr. Becker was at SISU from April 30 until May 11.
