Cox Center Director Appointed to Advisory Board
For New Media Women Entrepreneurs Initiative
Dr. Lee B. Becker, director of the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research, has been named to the Advisory Board of the McCormick Tribune New Media Women Entrepreneurs Initiative.
The appointment was made by Jan Shaffer, executive director of J-Lab, the Institute for Interactive Journalism, based at the University of Maryland. J-Lab is an incubator for news experiments to help people engage in critical public issues.
The Advisory Board will work with Shafer over the 18-month life of the project, which is designed to focus on the attributes and creative thinking women can bring to the news industry. The project is funded by a grant from the McCormick Tribune Foundation of Chicago.
The Board held it first meeting on January 25 in Washington, D.C. and discussed the launch of a competition leading to the funding of three women or women-led projects designed Ato help change the world of journalism. The Board also discussed research needs and a recognition program for women entrepreneurs.
Other members of the Advisory Board are Dr. Maurene Beasley from the University of Maryland, Sara Melillo from the McCormick Tribune Foundation, Cynthia Miller from WrightWay Consulting Inc., based in Atlanta, Chhayal Parikh, a journalist with U.S. News & World Report, and Vivian Vahlberg, from Northwestern University in Illinois.
Dr. Becker directs the Annual Surveys of Journalism & Mass Communication, which are housed in the Cox Center and which provide basic data on the journalism and mass communication labor market and on journalism education.
The Cox Center is the international service and outreach unit of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
