Korean Journalist Will Spend Year Studying Changes in Media
Il Keun Park, a senior writer at The Hankook Ilbo (The Korean Times), joined the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research at the University of Georgia in mid August as a visiting scholar.
Park will stay at the Center for a year, conducting research on the rise of the new media and the impace of the new media on the traditional media, especially the newspaper.
Park’s visit to the University of Georgia is funded by LG Sangnam Press Foundation, the largest of its kind in Korea. The visit is organized by the Cox Center, a unit of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Mr. Park will visit classes, meet with faculty and students, and explore the resources of the University. The New Media Institute, located in the Grady College, will help Park make contact with leaders in the new media field.
For his research, Park said he would make extensive contacts with both the media industry and the academia. “I will do the research in collaboration with the Cox Center, and if possible, other UGA institutions as well,” Park said.
“The old media is having a crisis,” Park observed. “Free online news content has encroached into the market of daily newspapers, and I would like to help prepare the change for the future.”
Park has worked for The Hankook Ilbo for 14 years. Over the years, he has worked for the ombudsman desk, the national desk and the business desk. He covered Korea’s high-tech sector as a senior writer with the business desk.
“We are delighted to have Il Keun Park spend the year with us,” Dr. Lee B. Becker, director of the Cox Center, said. We will gain from his experiences in Korea and help him learn about the experiences of the U.S. media during this challenging period.”
