2022 Study Away Photo and Video Contest

Studying away from campus this summer? We want to help share your experiences! 

Whether you’re studying internationally or elsewhere in the United States, Grady College is inviting you to participate in our 2022 Study Away Photo and Video Contest. Submit photos and videos that you take during your study away experiences for a chance to win an experiential award and have your work displayed on the Grady website and/or in the halls of Grady College! The deadline to submit photos and videos is September 2, 2022.

PHOTO CONTEST

Categories:

  • Grady Dawgs in Action: Share your experiences by documenting you and/or your peers in action. These photos should be candid and showcase your experiences away. Submissions should portray time spent learning and working in and/or outside of the classroom (reporting or doing camera work, for example). Photos in this category can be taken on trips inside or outside the United States. 
    • Number of winners: 1
    • Prize: Custom experience featuring a day shadowing an industry professional. 
    • The winning photo will be displayed physically on the Grady Student Experience Wall and on digital display boards. 
  • Grady around the World: Show your school spirit around the world by wearing or displaying Grady College gear. Photos should be taken in recognizable or stunning locations (think national/international landmarks). Photos in this category can be taken on trips inside or outside the United States. 
    • Number of winners: 1
    • Prize: Lunch with Dean Davis. 
    • The winning photo will be displayed physically on the Grady Student Experience Wall and on digital display boards. 
  • Scenes from Away: This is the bucket category. Throughout your study away experience, you’re encouraged to document your time. The old adage goes: a picture is worth 1,000 words. Take photos that holistically tell the story of your experience away from campus. Photos in this category can be taken on trips inside or outside the United States. 
    • Number of winners: 1
    • Prize: Lunch with Dean Davis.
    • The winning photo will be displayed physically on the Grady Student Experience Wall and on digital display boards. 

Photo Specifications: 

  • Please submit photos through this Google form. All photos should be titled as follows: (FirstName,LastName,Category). 
  • Photos must be in jpg or png format. 
  • Submit a maximum of 10 photos per category. 
  • Submit images in as high resolution as possible. Low resolution images will not be considered. 
  • There can be no added text or elements on your photo 
  • Preference will be given to photos without filters or added effects. Light Photoshop and Lightroom editing is okay. 
  • Submissions must be original work. (Be aware of the legal ramifications when using material created by others.)
  • Grady College has the right to disqualify any photo it deems to be inappropriate in nature. (No alcohol can be shown.)

VIDEO CONTEST

Categories: 

  • Trip in a minute: In between 1-3 minutes, tell the story of your trip. Try to create this video over the duration of your time away, rather than filming everything at once. Tell a holistic narrative of your experience that incorporates B-roll and audio. Videos in this category can be taken on trips inside or outside the United States. 
    • Number of winners: 1
    • Prize: Custom experience featuring a day shadowing an industry professional.
    • The winning video will be displayed on the Grady College website. 
  • Best B-roll: Provide context to your trip and experience(s) studying away by providing at least 10 seconds of B-roll. The video should be visually engaging and portray a powerful and/or influential atmosphere and/or experience. Videos in this category can be taken on trips inside or outside the United States. 
    • Number of winners: 1
    • Prize: Lunch with Dean Davis.
    • The winning video will be displayed on the Grady College website. 

Specifications: 

  • Please upload the video to YouTube and submit the link through this Google form.
  • All videos must be filmed horizontally, either on a DSLR or smartphone. 
  • Videos may be in any language. However, videos that feature languages other than English should include English subtitles or translation.
  • All submissions must be original work. 
  • You must credit any other contributors, anyone who served as a camera operator for you.
  • Submit a maximum of 5 videos per category. 
  • Grady College reserves the right to disqualify any video it deems to be inappropriate in nature. (No alcohol can be shown.)
  • If you choose to include music in your video, it must be copyright free, or you must have written permission from the artist. 

FAQs

Who is eligible? 

  • The photo and video contests are open to all Grady students studying away on a Grady Study Away program or participating in UGA at Oxford or UGA at Cuba. 

How are winners decided?

  • A panel of judges from Grady College will decide winners based on image/video quality, creativity and sense of place.

What are the deadlines? 

  • All photo and/or video submissions must be submitted by September 2. Decisions will be made by September 16. 

How do we plan to use the photos? 

  • Grady College may use the photos on the Grady website, social media, digital display boards and in printed materials, among other promotional materials determined by Grady College. 

Media Release

 

By entering your work in this contest, you hereby irrevocably consent to and authorize the use by Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia and its employees of your photograph(s) and/or video(s), the subject’s image, voice and/or likeness (Media) as follows:

The College shall have the right to photograph, publish, republish, adapt, exhibit, perform, reproduce, edit, modify, make derivative works, distribute, display or otherwise use or reuse the image, voice and/or likeness in connection with any product or service in all markets, media or technology now known or hereafter developed in the College’s products or services as long as there is no intent to use the image, voice and/or likeness in a disparaging manner.

The College may exercise any of these rights itself or through any successors, transferees, licensees, distributors or other parties, commercial or nonprofit. You acknowledge receipt of good and valuable consideration in exchange for this Release, which may be the opportunity to represent the University in its promotional and advertising materials described above.

​You waive the right to inspect or approve the Media or any finished materials that incorporate the Media. You understand and agree that the Media will become part of the College’s permanent file and that it may be distributed to other organizations or individuals for use in publication. You also understand that you will receive no compensation in connection with the use of the Media.
