2017 Media & Leadership Academy registration now open

After 32 years, the Georgia Journalism Academy—a residential one-week summer program for high school students—has been redesigned and rebranded the Media & Leadership Academy in order to more closely align with Grady College curricula.

Rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in the mass communication field will choose from one of the three offered tracks: journalism, advertising and public relations or entertainment (video production). They will spend the first half of the week, June 4-11, learning about their chosen track. During the second half of the week, they will develop more specific skill sets based on their interests by working in teams to complete a class project.

Media & Leadership Academy students participate in a wide range of activities during the week.

“We are excited to add a new component of experiential learning to the curriculum, which will provide the students opportunities for real life experiences in the field,” said Roxanna Gandía, director of High School & Diversity Outreach at Grady College. “The addition of two new tracks—AdPR and entertainment—will expose the students to different majors and careers.”

Professionals will visit the students and facilitate activities on campus. Participants also will travel to companies and venues, with one of the visits focusing on leadership development. Nightly activities throughout the week will provide additional opportunities for the students to network, build connections and have fun.

Registration for this year’s Media & Leadership Academy is open at Grady.uga.edu/apply/high-school-discovery through May 12, but space is limited to 20 students per track. The program fee is $550 per student, but limited scholarships are also available.
