Management Seminar for College News Editors
July 23-28, 2017
As a top editor at your campus news organization, you will meet with more than 50 student editors at this leadership workshop on July 23-28, 2016 at the University of Georgia, where hundreds of students from the U.S. and Canada have learned journalism and management skills since 1996.
Your adviser must first register your news organization to request a spot in the seminar. As the selected editor for your campus news organization, you will need to complete the Editor Survey no later than July 1.
MSCNE17 will focus on developing your leadership skills and explore ways that new technologies and interactive journalism are expanding your roles and responsibilities as editor and your potential to reach readers.
This year’s program will include presenters from the Student Press Law Center, the Poynter Institute, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dallas Morning News, CNN, Creative Loafing Atlanta, Google News Lab, Social News Desk and other major news organizations. Student editors also will serve as presenters, sharing success stories and best examples.
The seminar will begin with an orientation and opening dinner at the Holiday Inn Express in Athens. It will conclude with a closing banquet the final night (Thursday, July 27) of the conference. We request that you schedule departure flights on Friday. If you wish to stay longer in Athens, seminar room rates will be available but you will be responsible for that additional lodging expense.
Your MSCNE17 registration fee covers five nights lodging, most meals and all workshop materials. Student editors are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from the seminar that begins and ends in Athens.
TRAVEL / TRANSPORTATION to SEMINAR
If you FLY, we suggest your destination be Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta Airport. Groome Transportation provides the most efficient transportation to Athens. We suggest that your flight arrive in Atlanta no later than 3 p.m. on Sunday to allow time to connect with the shuttle van service and get to Athens on time for the opening evening orientation dinner at 7 p.m.
You can purchase a one-way or roundtrip ticket which is $39/$78 respectively. You need to make your own reservation via the web. Check the Groome Transportation website http://athens.groometransportation.com/ for schedules and reservations. Please have your plane arrival and departure information available to coincide with the shuttle schedules.
NOTE: Your shuttle stop in downtown Athens will be the Holiday Inn Express, 513 W. Broad St. Ask the driver to drop you there, even though it’s not listed on the stops included on the Groome schedule. Please note there is also a Holiday Inn. You are going to the Holiday Inn Express. If the driver takes you to the Holiday Inn instead, check at the front desk and a motel shuttle will take you to the Holiday Inn Express, about two blocks away.
If you DRIVE, you will receive free parking at the Holiday Inn Express in Athens.
TRAVEL HOME from SEMINAR
Depart on Friday from the Holiday Inn Express in Athens. Groome Transportation is your best option to return to Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta Airport. Coordinate your shuttle reservation time to allow adequate check-in time before your return flight home.
COORDINATE SUMMER WORK and SEMINAR SCHEDULES
Notify your employer you will be attending this leadership workshop on July 23-28. If your employer needs additional information, have him/her contact MSCNE Director Dr. Nsenga Burton via email at Nsenga.firstname.lastname@example.org
BE PREPARED TO SHOW, DISCUSS YOUR BEST WORK
Review your best reporting and features and be prepared to discuss at the seminar. Collect issues of your campus newspaper. Bring them with you to the workshop in July. During breakout sessions you will compare and critique pages and sections with fellow editors. Some examples to consider:
New sections or publications
- The Big Event – coverage of the biggest campus event/issue/controversy of the year
- Front pages – your best or (if you dare) your worst
- Opinion pages – your most spirited debate, best edits, cartoons, letters, columns
- Sports, Arts & Entertainment – your best pages, sections and story ideas
- You ARE the News – when your news organization made news because coverage or lack of it caused major controversy
Feel free to email online news stories to MSCNE Director Dr. Nsenga Burton at Nsenga.email@example.com. Make sure you include your name, college or university and name of student publication in the email. Please note that it is for MSCNE17.
REVIEW ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGES, GUIDELINES
Consult with your adviser on the following questions and come prepared to discuss the implementation, impact and implications for others:
- Have you recently changed your print publication frequency or format, or plan to do so next year?
- Have you added or plan to add video or multimedia features to your website?
- Have you developed new mobile strategies, services or content?
- Have you partnered with other campus organizations to expand or merge print and broadcast?
- Have you recently revised your organization’s mission statement, job descriptions or guidelines for new employees or your code of ethics?
Casual attire is appropriate for your week in Athens. The visit to Atlanta on Thursday afternoon calls for professional business attire.
Late July is hot and humid in our area. Please bring a light jacket or sweater to wear as the classrooms tend to be cool in the summer. You may consider a rain jacket or slicker in case it rains while you’re here.
