Owen Ullmann
Owen Ullmann is Editor of the print edition of USA TODAY . He also has served as Deputy Managing Editor for News, Deputy Editorial Page Editor, Washington Editor in charge of national security and economics coverage, and Senior Correspondent for economic policy and politics.
Prior to joining USA TODAY in 1999, Owen spent six years at Business Week magazine, where he helped manage the Washington Bureau as senior news editor. He was later named Washington senior writer, the first correspondent outside the New York home office to hold that title.
From 1983 to 1993, Owen worked in the Washington Bureau of Knight-Ridder Newspapers, covering economics, the White House and the State Department. He won two awards from the White House Correspondents’ Association for his coverage of the Reagan Presidency.
Owen worked for the Associated Press from 1973 to 1983, first as automotive writer in Detroit, and later as labor writer and chief economics correspondent in Washington. He began his professional career in 1969 as a reporter for the Elizabeth (NJ) Daily Journal.
Owen's other journalism experience includes serving as managing editor of The International Economy, a Washington-based magazine that focuses on global economic policy. He has been a contributing editor at Washingtonian magazine, which named him one of the top 50 journalists in the nation's capital. He has been a commentator on National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition: Sunday, and is the author of a 1986 biography of former Budget Director David Stockman.
A native of New Jersey, Owen graduated with honors from Rutgers University. He received his master’s degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which has twice honored him with awards for distinguished journalism.
