Tudor Vlad is director of the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research and professor in the Department of Journalism, Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Georgia .
Vlad holds a doctorate from the Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and a bachelor's degree from the University of Bucharest . Dr. Vlad came to the Cox Center in 1999, as a Fulbright Senior scholar. Prior to moving to Georgia, Vlad was a member of the faculty of the Department of Journalism at the Babes-Bolyai University. Dr. Vlad founded and chaired this program, the only department in Central Europe having three independent sections (Romanian, Hungarian and German). He also is a director of the World Free Press Institute (California ).
Dr. Vlad is the author of two books, The Interview. From Plato to Playboy and The Romanian Writers’ Fascination with Film, and of four published novels, co-editor of Copyright and Consequences (with Lee Becker) and author of numerous studies, scholarly materials and articles published in the United States and in Europe.
He has been involved in over 40 U.S. led international programs whose main goal has been to foster democracy and stability in emerging democracies by promoting freedom of speech, independent media and inter-ethnic dialog. He conducted training programs for journalists and journalism educators in Belarus, Hungary, Kenya, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, and Ukraine, and trained journalists and political leaders from over 20 countries.
Dr. Vlad has 20-year experience as a journalist in a totalitarian system and as a communication expert in an emerging democracy. After the fall of communism in Romania, he was the editor-in-chief of two prestigious publications (one in English).
The James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research was established in March of 1990 as a unit of the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication through a generous grant from The Jim Cox Jr. Foundation of Atlanta. The Cox Center conducts training and research projects in locations outside the United States and fosters the exchange of information among media scholars and among media professionals around the world.
