Sopio Chakvetadze Joins Grady College As Muskie Fellow to Study Public Relations
A passion for governmental communications brought Muskie Graduate Fellow Sopio Chakvetadze from her home in Tbilisi, Georgia, to the University of Georgia in the United States where she has begun studying in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Chakvetadze is pursuing her second master’s degree, this one in public relations. She originally is from Kutaisi a small town in Georgia.
Before coming to the United States, Chakvetadze worked for the country of Georgia in the president’s communications office. She began working for the new president during the change in government.
She has worked with the Media Task Force that prepared for former President George W. Bush’s visit to Georgia in 2005 as well as the presidential website and other translation efforts.
Chakvetadze received her bachelor of arts in English Language Literature and her first master’s degree in Public Administration.
Chakvetadze future plans include working in governmental communication for her country of Georgia, she said. She wants to help perfect the communication system between the government, the people and other countries.
Chakvetadze has a desk with other graduate and undergraduate students in the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research, the international outreach arm of the Grady College.
The Cox Center facilitates the application for Muskie Fellows wishing to study in the Grady College.
The Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program provides opportunities for graduate students and professionals from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan for one-year non-degree, one-year degree or two-year degree study in the United States.
Established by the U.S. Congress in 1992 to encourage economic and democratic growth in Eurasia, the Muskie program is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State, and administered by International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) in Washington.
The Cox Center has hosted Muskie Fellows from Armenia, Ukraine and Russia during their studies in the Grady College.
