Cox Research Assistant Tells Fellow Graduates To be Proud They Are "Georgia Scholars"
George L. Daniels, who completed his doctoral studies in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication in December, encouraged the participants in the University of Georgia's formal fall semester commencement ceremony for graduate students to think of themselves proudly as "Georgia Scholars."
"As graduates of the University of Georgia, we must celebrate what makes us unique, said Daniels, who spoke on behalf of all those receiving degrees at the December 21 ceremony. "We are Georgia scholars," he said.
Daniels, who served as a research assistant in the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research while completing his graduate studies, is now on the faculty in the College of Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Alabama.
Daniels told the graduates he had written a poem that "captures some of the unique University of Georgia graduate traditions in the areas of teaching, research and service" and asked them to stand and join him to join in the refrain: "We are Georgia scholars."
Daniels received his hood-the formal recognition of receipt of his doctorate-from Dr. Lee B. Becker, director of the Cox Center, and Dr. C. Ann Hollifield, a faculty member in the Telecommunications Department of the Grady College. Dr. Becker served as dissertation adviser for Dr. Daniels, while Dr. Hollifield advised him for this thesis.
Dr. Daniels' dissertation examined how urban high school students make decisions about media careers. His master's thesis looked at the responses of broadcast professionals to newsroom change.
While in the Cox Center, Dr. Daniels worked on research projects focused on the professional education of journalists, both at the university and in the workplace.
The Cox Center is a unit of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
