Journalist from China's Yunnan Province Begins Year-Long Visit to Cox Center
Yuanxin Dai, a journalist from Yunnan Province in western China, arrived at the University of Georgia in late June to begin a year-long study of the practices of broadcast programming and management in the United States.
Ms. Dai will serve as a visiting scholar in the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research, a unit of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
Her stay in the United States is sponsored by the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education. Ms. Dai worked as a reporter and editor for Yunnan TV prior to her travel to the United States.
During her stay, Dai will study journalism in America, focusing on the approaches to television programming and management. She will also attempt to create contacts for people who wish to visit China as part of professional exchanges in the future.
Ms. Dai graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism from the Beijing Broadcasting Institute in 1992. She has worked at Yunnan TV since that time.
At Yunnan TV Ms. Dai covered transportation construction, tourism development and economic cooperation between Yunnan and Southeast Asian countries.
"Remains of Chinese and Japanese Mountaineers found on Meili Snow Mountain" by Dai won the highest award of its kind in China, "China TV News Report Award," in 1998. She won the same awardin 1995 for "Why an Expressway in Kunming Turns into a Road Market." Kunming is the administrative center of Yunnan Province and the home city of Ms. Dai. Her 1995 report was included in "the Collection of Outstanding News Reports by Women Journalists in Yunnan Province."
Ms. Dai will meet with Grady College faculty members and graduate students during her visit and participate in research projects in the Cox Center and elsewhere in the College.
"We're very pleased to have Yuanxin Dai join us in the Center," said Cox Center Director Dr. Lee B. Becker. "I'm sure her expertise will contribute to the work of the Center. I believe she'll learn much from the faculty and students here as well."
