Dr. Vlad Named Assistant To Cox Center Director
Dr. Tudor Vlad, who spent a year as a Senior Fulbright Scholar and two years as a Visiting Research Scientist in the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research, has been named as the Center's assistant director.
Dr. Vlad will have staff responsibility for day-to-day activities of the Cox Center. The Cox Center is a unit of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
"I'm delighted to have someone with Dr.Vlad's expertise in journalism and journalism education in the Center," Cox Center Director Dr. Lee B. Becker said in making the appointment, which is effective June 1. "Dr. Vlad has contributed much to the operation of the Center in the past three years, and I'm looking forward to working with him in the future."
Dr. Vlad, who established the Department of Journalism at Babes-Bolyai University in his home town of Cluj-Napoca after the fall of communism in Romania, first came to the Cox Center in the autumn of 1989 as a Fulbright Scholar.
During that first year, Dr.Vlad studied the curriculum of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, with particular focus on public relations and advertising instruction. In collaboration with Dr. Becker, Dr. Vlad also organized, edited and contributed three chapters to a book on the consequences of copyright, to be published by Hampton Press in the summer of 2002. He also assisted in many Cox Center programs.
In the autumn of 2000, Dr. Vlad began work in the Center on a prototype for web-based instruction for journalists and journalism educators outside the United States. That project resulted in creation of a web course in marketing and other forms of applied media research. The course is available in beta form at present.
In academic year 2001-2002, Dr.Vlad worked with Dr.Becker on grant applications and various research and service projects and assisted with administrative responsibilities in the Center.
During his time at the Cox Center, Dr. Vlad has authored two research articles in journals, presented three convention papers, delivered invited lectures at five different universities and presented a Capstone Seminar to a meeting organized by the International Research and Exchanges board and the American Council of Learned Societies.
As assistant director, Dr.Vlad will help plan and coordinate training and research projects in the Center. He will join Cox Center Project Coordinators Kornelia Probst-Mackowiak and Michele Head in reporting to Dr. Becker.
Dr. Vlad served as Chairman of the Department of Journalism at Babes-Bolyai University from its founding in 1993 until 1999, when he took leave to accept the award of a Senior Fulbright Research Scholarship here in the United States.
Among the other distinctions of the Department of Journalism that Dr. Vlad founded is its commitment to instruction in three separate languages, Romanian, Hungarian and German, reflecting the three cultural traditions and histories of the Transylvania region in which Cluj-Napoca is located.
Dr. Vlad also has served as Director for Central Europe of the World Free Press Institute, based in California, and served in programs in Belarus for the Institute as well as collaborated on programs for the Institute in Romania.
Prior to becoming a faculty member at Babes-Bolyai University, Dr. Vlad worked as a journalist. He also is the author of four published novels.
