Professor from University of Bucharest To Study Media Economics During Visit
George Popescu, an assistant lecturer in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication Studies at the University of Bucharest, arrived at the University of Georgia in late May to investigate the way the faculty of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication conduct research and teach about media economics and media management.
Popescu's month-long stay in Georgia is part of an exchange program between the University of Romania and the University of Georgia organized by the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research, a unit of the Grady College.
In April of 2001, the Cox Center hosted Madelina Balasescu, a colleague of Popescu. During her stay Balasecue examined the way the College teaches broadcast production and management.
Shortly before Popescu left Romania for the United States, Dr. C. Ann Hollifield, associate professor in the Department of Telecommunication of the Grady College, conducted a week-long series of lectures at the University of Bucharest on media management.
In addition to serving as a faculty member at the University of Bucharest, Popescu is an editor of the The Global Network, a scientific magazine published by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication Studies in Bucharest.
While at the University of Georgia, Popescu will meet with Grady College faculty members conducting research on media economics and media management issues. Included are Dr. Hugh Martin, Dr. Hollifield, Dr. Lee B. Becker and Dr. Tudor Vlad. Dr. Becker is director of the Cox Center, and Dr. Vlad, a Romanian, is assistant director.
Popescu also will meet with Dr. Kent Middleton, head of the Department of Journalism at the Grady College, who taught media law in Bucharest in the 1990s. Dr. Middleton helped set up the exchange program that brought Popescu and Ms. Balasescu to the University of Georgia.
"It is a delight to have George Popescu here with us," Cox Center Director Dr. Becker said. "We consider it an honor to be involved with the University of Bucharest in this exchange initiative."
