Doctoral Student in Linguistics from Ukraine Visits UGA on Regional Scholar Exchange
Oleksandr Kapranov, a doctoral student at the Kiev State Linguistics University, arrived in Athens in late August to start a four-month-long visit during which he will conduct research on the structure of advertising used in television news programming.
Kapranov, who prefers to be called "Sasha," is being hosted by the Cox Center. He is the recipient of a U.S. State Department-funded fellowship from the Regional Scholar Exchange Program. The program is administered by the American Councils for International Education and provides support for scholars from the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union.
Kapranov has an office in the Cox Center and access to facilities of the University, including the libraries. The Cox Center arranged university housing, though housing and other costs are covered by the fellowship from the American Councils for International Education. Cox Center Director Dr. Lee B. Becker is serving as Kapranov's faculty mentor during his stay.
"We're extremely pleased to have Sasha here in the Cox Center," Dr. Becker said. "We're looking forward to learning about his research and about his personal interests."
During the stay at UGA, Kapranov will meet with students and faculty in the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, in which the Cox Center is located. He brought materials with him to allow him to tell students about developments in the media in his country today.
