Russian Professors Discuss Cox Center, Future Linkages with Their University
Four Professors from the Moscow State Law Academy Institute in Orenburg in southern Russia learned about the work of the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research and journalism education at the University of Georgia during a visit to the Center in April.
Three of the four professors teach law at the Orenburg Institute; the fourth is a professor of political science. They are spending the spring semester at the University of Georgia as guests of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government (CVIOG). The partnership program between the Russian and Georgian institutes focuses on public administration expertise.
Cox Center Director Dr. Lee B. Becker and Cox Center Research Scientist Dr. Tudor Vlad outlined for the group the programs of the Cox Center. Of particular interest was a project on copyright, which has resulted in a manuscript soon to be published in the United States and Romania.
Drs. Becker and Vlad also discussed recent training programs by the Center in Fiji, Ethiopia, Chile and Ukraine and sessions the Center has conducted for journalists and journalism professors from Haiti and Kazakhstan. Orenburg is near the Kazakhstani border of Russia.
Following the presentation by Drs. Becker and Vlad the group toured the facilities of the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, of which the Cox Center is a part.
Dr. Becker invited the group to visit the Cox Center again before returning to Russia at the beginning of the summer. The Russians said they would discuss with their colleagues in Orenburg possible journalism training programs involving the Cox Center.
