Cox Center Director Discusses Evaluation With Knight Foundation in Miami Meeting
Cox Center Director Dr. Lee B. Becker traveled to Miami in January to serve as a consultant to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in its efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of its midcareer journalism training programs.
Dr. Becker participated in a meeting with the Foundation's midcareer program directors that was led by Penelope McPhee, vice president and chief program officer for the Knight Foundation, and Dr. John Bare, Knight's evaluation director. Dr. Becker discussed some general goals of program evaluation, gave examples from other fields, and reviewed what is known about the effectiveness of midcareer programs in journalism.
The Knight Foundation supports a number of midcareer training programs, including the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism at Columbia University, the Knight Fellowships for Professional Journalists at Stanford University, the Knight Foundation Fellowship in Law at Yale University, the Knight Journalism Fellowships in Business, Medicine, Law and Education at the University of Michigan, and the Knight Science Journalism Fellowships at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The programs serve both domestic and foreign journalists.
The Cox Center completed an evaluation of the Knight International Press Fellowship Program, operated by the International Center for Journalists in Washington, in 2000.
