Workshop on Financial Journalism Discussed for Shanghai in 2001

During a meeting in December in Shanghai, Jiao Yang, deputy director of Shanghai's Information Office, and Cox Center Director Dr. Lee B. Becker agreed to develop plans to collaborate on a workshop for journalists in Shanghai in 2001.

The workshop is tentatively planned for the summer and would focus on financial journalism. The Information Office of Shanghai Municipality would host the workshop for local journalists. The Cox Center would provide experts to lead the sessions on financial journalism.

The meeting between Ms. Yang and Dr. Becker was organized by Dr. Haoran Lu of the University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Government. The Institute, through its International Center for Democratic Governance, has been working with government officials in Shanghai and Beijing for two years. As part of that program, governmental representatives of those two cities visited the University of Georgia-and the Cox Center and Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication-in the autumn of 2000.

Ms. Jiao was joined in the meeting in Shanghai by Qian Hua Fei, director of the Shanghai office for the news media. Both agreed that local journalists, who frequently find themselves reporting on international business activities in the burgeoning Chinese financial and business center, could gain from training in this type of journalism.

In addition to meeting with the Shanghai municipal leaders. Dr. Becker met with Ding Fa Zhang, senior editor of the Wenhui-Xinmin United Press Group. Dr. Becker and Mr. Ding discussed ways in which the Cox Center could coordinate exchanges between the Shanghai newspaper group and the University of Georgia.

Prior to the meetings in Shanghai, Dr. Becker met in Beijing with Huang Qing, deputy editor-in-chief of the China Daily. Ms. Huang explained the operation of her newspapers, and Dr. Becker discussed the activities of the Cox Center and the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
