Researchers Find Weak Job Market for Journalism Graduates, Slowdown in Enrollment Growth
Graduates of U.S. journalism and mass communication programs in the spring of 2009 confronted a job market unlike any that graduates have encountered in the nearly 25 years for which comparable data are available, researchers from the University of Georgia reported in August.

Director Joins Discussions of Women Entrepreneur Applications
Cox International Center Director, Lee B. Becker joined six other members of the New Media Women Entreprenuers Advisory Board at a meeting in Washington on June 3 to review more than 500 applications for support from the McCormick Foundation New Media Women Entrepreneurs Initiative.
The winning four projects will be announced later this summer by Jan Schaffer, executive director of J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism at the School of Communication at American University, which runs the competiton.

Cox Center Names New Administrative Specialist
Laurie Anglin joined the Cox International Center as administrative specialist in late May. Prior to joining the Center, Anglin worked as an assistant controller and controller with various firms in Georgia and as an accounting manager at Sun Trust Bank. She most recently has been working at Community Bank & Trust in Winder, Ga.

Romanian Prospective Student Visits Grady College
Alexandra Vintila of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, spent 10 days in the Grady College in April, observing graduate courses and meeting UGA faculty and students. Vintila holds two Bachelor’s degrees in marketing and management, one from Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and one from the University Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand, France. She is interested in earning a Master’s in advertising and public relations in the United States.

Cox Center Associate Director Discusses Program Needs in Republic of Moldova
Dr. Tudor Vlad, the associate director of the Cox International Center at the University of Georgia, visited journalism organizations, governmental bodies and nongovernmental communication institutions in April in the Republic of Moldova at the invitation of the communication advisor of the prime minister of the Moldovan government.

Becker Receives Award from Georgia River Network
The Georgia River Network named Cox International Center Director Dr. Lee B. Becker as its 2010 Volunteer of the Year at its annual conference in February on Jekyll Island. Dr. Becker was honored for founding Friends of Barber Creek and for his blog, Oconee County Observations, where he reports on governmental issues in his home county.

Cox Center Associate Director Vlad Discusses Media Development Research at New York Conference
Dr. Tudor Vlad from the University of Georgia called on donors, implementers and researchers to work collaboratively at a conference on media assistance held in New York in late January.
Vlad said that “Media assistance implementers know well what international programs are in place and how they are designed, but they also need good evaluations of the impact of these programs."
